Since Dumas joined the National Main Street program in 1998, major improvements have been made in lighting, sidewalks, and landscaping, along with facade and building renovations. Having achieved National Main Street City designation, Dumas has two major blocks of downtown included in a National Historic District. Main Street Dumas is led by Jann Farmer, executive director, and a strong corps of volunteers working on promotion, organization, design, and re-structuring. Sponsored events include Spring Out to Lunch and October Downtown. Among the historical points is Meador Pharmacy, operating continuously since 1917 with an original soda fountain and gathering place.
